Building on Our Character: Fresh Looks Downtown

Posted on July 8, 2025 at 4:27 PM by Stephanie Trottier

Downtown Monticello is full of charm that is distinctly Monticello. Our goal is to keep building on that. One of our key priorities is encouraging small and medium-scale investments that enhance the heart of our city. We want to support the incredible businesses that already call Downtown home while creating a vibrant, welcoming space that draws people in.

In the summer of 2018, the Monticello Economic Development Authority (EDA) launched the Downtown Façade Forgivable Loan Program to encourage additional investment in retail and commercial properties near Broadway and Walnut. The goal of the program is to support business and property owners in enhancing their storefronts and investing in the look and feel of Downtown.

As a bonus, the loan is fully forgiven after three years of ownership. It’s a win-win for businesses looking to make improvements while committing to the long-term success of our community.

Since launching, the program has helped four businesses bring new life to their buildings, with more expressing interest. The EDA continues to work closely with businesses, offering support and assistance as they make their mark on Downtown’s future.

As part of the improvements, participating businesses also receive a historical sign that tells the story of the building. It’s a small touch with big impact—reminding all of us of Downtown’s rich history and its ongoing evolution.
